Song of Shadows was part of an immersive sound and art experience in Beyond the Door Gallery telling the stories of Hastings people, drawing links between the stories of life in the interwar period and the earlier work of Robert Tressell.
We all have insight into the lives of people one or two generations behind us. After that, it gets more milky; I find it more difficult to imagine my great-grandparents’ lives. The film draws inspiration from transcripts of 1980s oral histories, which give visceral descriptions of what it was like to be a child in Hastings in the 1920s. The film offers whispers of these children dreaming about what the future might hold.
