A series of three Tabletop Cinema Lab sessions with Hastings Contemporary

Messages to the Future

This series drew inspiration from Hastings Contemporary’s ‘Still Life’ exhibition.

Taking place over three weeks, each session provided a space for participants to slow down, make sets in boxes with careful arrangement and lighting, and make a short film-poem on the following themes:

WEEK 1: Ordinary / Extraordinary
On Valentine’s day we explored ideas of LOVE: What message would you like to send to the future about your experience of LOVE when it lies at the heart of your everyday? Who would you like to send it to?

WEEK 2: Wild | Cultivated
We explored how nature has been categorised and labelled. What message would you like to send to the future about the benefits or dangers of trying to control and cultivate things that are wild by nature?

WEEK 3: Trace | Absence Wild | Cultivated
We explored how objects can form a vivid trace of an absent person. What objects have become important to you in this way? How can we see someone through the traces they have left, in the things they have left behind?

“My favourite aspect was being motivated to think outside my creative box as a painter, having inspiring conversations with Rebecca and our group, widening my horizons.”

“I was delighted with everything about the workshop from the themes suggested, the equipment provided, the judicious mix of props and wealth of materials provided by our tutor Rebecca. She was clear and inspiring in her instructions, worksheets and introductory talks. We were instantly aware of being the privileged students of a uniquely talented filmmaker sharing precious gems of knowledge and insight with us.”
